Drew

BA in Music Composition

As a toddler, Drew began picking out tunes by ear on his family piano.  By the first grade, his parents formally enrolled him in private lessons with pianist Dr. Steve Mento.  Drew continued to play throughout his childhood and, in addition to the piano, began studying saxophone in the fourth grade.  He served as the pianist for his sixth grade music performance after the instructor was injured and could not play, as well as acted as the accompanist for his high school choir.  As Drew grew in his musicianship, he began booking professional gigs for weddings, private parties and local yacht clubs.  He realized that he wanted to pursue a full-time career in music and, being an avid songwriter since age eleven, he enrolled at the University of the Arts where he received his BA in Music Composition.  His experience in college allowed him to expand from the piano to several other instruments.  During this time, he studied voice and sang in, and accompanied for, his university choir.  He began teaching voice to beginning students for a local music studio.  Upon graduating college Drew went on to write, compose, and produce his first musical.  In May 2023, he composed all of the incidental music as well as a handful of show songs for an off-Broadway musical.  He also participated as an on-stage musician.

Over the years, Drew has continued to play for churches, weddings, private parties and other events as well as booked shows at various bars and lounges around south New Jersey and New York.  In addition to being an active performing musician, he has worked as a private music educator for over ten years.  As an instructor, Drew believes it is essential to find what motivates each student.  He teaches music fundamentals through a blend of method book work and repertoire that is engaging and inspiring to the specific student.  One of his goals as an educator is to prepare the next generation of competent and creative musicians.  That process includes building confidence, incorporating diverse styles, and encouraging innovation.
